Heroku add-on · Alpha
Join the Heroku alpha
DeployAngel is a Heroku add-on that checks every release in production and tells you when it's safe to stop watching it. It's in alpha, and Heroku lists an add-on in its marketplace once 15 app owners have it installed. I'm looking for those 15.
If you run a Rails app on Heroku and deploy it often, I'd love your help. It's free, it takes a few minutes to set up, and you'll be talking to the person who builds it.
What you get
- A verdict on every release: cleared, failed, or not cleared yet, compared with your last healthy release on real traffic, by route and by job.
- Nothing to wire up for deploys. The add-on sets
DEPLOYANGEL_TOKENand subscribes to your app's releases, so every deploy, config change, and rollback is registered. - Sign-in from Heroku.
heroku addons:open deployangeltakes you straight to the dashboard, with no separate account or password. - Alerts by email or Slack when a release fails or can't be cleared in time, and a short Monday summary of the week's releases.
- Free. Alpha add-ons can only have a free plan, and DeployAngel is free during its beta too.
Who it's for
- A Rails 7.1 or later app on Ruby 3.1 or later, running on Heroku.
- You own the app on Heroku. Heroku counts app owners, so each tester's Heroku account counts once.
- You deploy it regularly, ideally a few times a week. A release needs some real traffic before it can clear.
- You're willing to keep the add-on installed for a few weeks and tell me what's confusing or wrong. Heroku only counts installs that stay.
How it works
- Ask to join with the email on your Heroku account. Heroku lets an alpha add-on be installed only by accounts I've added.
- I add you and reply by email, usually within a day.
- Install the add-on and the gem, then deploy:
heroku addons:create deployangel:test -a your-app # Gemfile gem "deployangel"
- Open the dashboard with
heroku addons:open deployangel -a your-app.
The first 24 hours after the agent starts reporting are a warm-up while DeployAngel learns what's normal for your app. Deploys then are still checked, and you'll hear right away if one fails, but they can't clear. The first deploy after that can.
Questions
What does it send? One small summary a minute from each process: request and job counts, response times, and exceptions with numbers, IDs, emails, and quoted values in their messages replaced. Never request bodies, parameters, cookies, SQL, or your data. The privacy policy lists exactly what's collected, and the agent's source is public.
Will it slow my app down? Recording a request adds about 2 µs. A background thread sends the summary, so requests never wait on the network, and if DeployAngel is unreachable your app carries on.
Can I remove it? Any time, with heroku addons:destroy deployangel. Its token stops working at once and its data is deleted 7 days later.
Not on Heroku? DeployAngel works wherever Rails runs. Sign up directly and follow the setup guide.
Thanks for considering it. Every alpha tester gets me past a step I can't take alone.
